Roof top waterproofing relates to mainly enhancement and refurbishment made to the roof top. It is made to repair and prevent further water leaks in the roofs.
Sometimes it could just be water seepage from the roof top, which resulted in water mark in plaster ceiling. However, there are also so roof problems resulting from rain water gutter.
There are many types of roofs, such as roof tiles, concrete roof slabs and other types. Hence, different types of roofs may require different types of waterproofing method.
Whether it is for commercial waterproofing or residential waterproofing, we have to identify the right waterproofing method most suitable for the right type of roofing system.
PU injection is a type of injection waterproofing where the membrane is injected into the ceilings and cracks. The membrane will crystalize upon being in touch with water, hence sealing the crack. This is the most budget type of waterproofing, but may not last.
Flexible cementitious waterproofing membrane is a type of waterproofing mixed together with cement. But instead of hardening the cement, which makes it easier to crack, flexible cementitious allow a degree of expansion and contraction due to the heat from the sun. However, you need to hack several inches of the concrete roof slab, before redoing the waterproofing and roof slab.
Torch-on bituminous membrane waterproofing requires us to lay the bitunimous membrane on the roof slab, and using torch to heat up the membrane to ensure it sticks on the roof and dry up all the water existing within the concrete roof slab.
PU Injection is most suitable for ceilings in the apartment where the owner do not have access to the unit above, and can only inject and waterproof from the ceiling below.
Flexible cementitious waterproofing membrane is most suitable for concrete roof slab, and for a longer lasting waterproofing effect.
Torch-on bituminous membrane waterproofing is usually used in a wider area of roof top, such as commercial and residential high rise building. Bituminous is heavy duty, and once hardened, provides a very thick surface layer protecting the roof from the sun.
Toilet waterproofing or Bathroom waterproofing relates to refurbishment on the flooring on the toilet or bathroom due to previous water leakages or water seepages.
Usually, water seepages problem affect bathrooms because the walls of the bathrooms were previously not constructed with waterproofing. Hence, the shower area where the wall usually gets wet, would be the source for the water seepages.
Whilst for water leakages, it affects both toilet and bathrooms floors as well as angle fillet at the drainage hole.
For the toilet and bathroom walls, it is usually constructed with ceramic tiles. However, if there are proven to have water seepage, we would advise the owner to hack away the ceramic tiles.
Once hack and remove the existing ceramic tiles, they should level the wall first. Next, they should apply the waterproofing system on the entire bathroom walls right up to the ceiling.
The walls must be completely dry before waterproofing is applied. Then, the owner can reinstall the ceramic tiles to cover the walls after waterproofing dries up.
Whilst for the toilet and bathroom floors, there are some normal cement floors, tiles floors or epoxy floors.
Regardless which type of floors, if there are waterproofing from the toilet or bathroom floors, we would suggest to hack and remove the tiles or the layers of epoxy or cement flooring.
Then, floor leveling must be done before applying waterproofing. Lastly, the owner can install their preferred flooring type and designs.
If it is your own house, and you want a longer lasting waterproofing method, we would suggest you to hack and remove the entire flooring, apply waterproofing and redo the flooring.
However, if budget is of a concern, the owner can consider to just focus on identified problematic area, such as the angle fillet or the area surrounding the drainage hole.
It may be specific area of hacking and replacing the affected tiles area. But the disadvantage of this is that it may not fully resolve the water leaking problems or may not last long.
